“Pool heat pumps work most efficiently with humidity but still work with dry air.”
Many times I field the question, do pool heat pumps work in California, or potential customers will say, “my pool guy tells me pool heat pumps will not work in California.” Short answer, yes, pool heat pumps do work in California. I think the confusion revolves around California’s dry climate. Pool heat pumps work at their most efficient with humidity, but still works with no humidity. A pool heat pump is transferring heat from the surrounding air. Pool heat pumps love humid air but still work with dry air. We have pool heat pumps like the Aqua Cal Super Quiet model 145 that will work as long as the ambient air temp is 48 and above. Then we have models like the Aqua Cal Super Quiet Icebreaker model 166R, which has the ability to continue heating even when the ambient air temp is in the 30’s. The model 166R also has the ability to cool your pool.
Below is a testimonial from customer Michelle in Penn Valley, California
“Our solar cover brought the water temperature up to 80 degrees, which wasn’t adequate for swimming this cool spring, with average daytime air temperatures hovering around 60-70 degrees. Ordering the heat pump was easy and it was delivered close to where it needed to be installed. Our heating and air conditioning guy installed the heat pump (Thanks Asa, that was a great suggestion) and after less than 14 hours of running time, we were happily swimming in 87 degree water. With the heat pump operating during the daily four hour filtering cycle, our pool is now at 90 degrees even though the air temperature is still quite chilly at night (high 40s). When we start getting our typical June temperatures of high 80s and 90s, I doubt that the heat pump will need to run much at all, but it will keep the water nice and warm for nighttime swimming.
For over a year I had pestered my local pool company with questions about heat pumps and instead, they kept trying to sell me a propane heater. I called other pool companies in the area and was told that it would take a very long time for a heat pump to work and didn’t I want to buy a propane heater instead? Finally I received a bid, which was much higher than I expected. I was a little concerned because the pool company salesman didn’t know much about heat pumps or how they’re installed.
I was very glad to find poolheatpumps.com and speak with Asa Strong. My husband was getting tired of me trying to talk him into buying a heat pump and finally he gave in when I showed him that the price of the unit Asa suggested was half of what I had been quoted by the local company. My husband was skeptical about how it would work, but now he’s absolutely delighted that he can swim several weeks earlier in the season. I haven’t said, ‘I told you so’ but I’ve been tempted!”
Thank you Asa and Mary.
